Varsity Volleyball Journal #1: First Game of the Season

Today we had our last first game in Brent Subic ...
It was the seniors last chance to make a first good impression.

And we did it!
We won our first game of the season! :)

Before the game the seniors gathered together and the three of us,
arms around each other jumped in a cirle getting pumped and excited for the game.

Going onto the court, all I was thinking about was just to try my best and do the best that I could. I had not even thought about WINNING the game!

When first stepping onto the court I felt a little nervous at first but then I tried to channel all my eustress into the game. We all worked hard, continued without giving up and won the game.
We had a great setter who was able to set the volleyball to me for a good hit. There were times when i wasn't in the right position to hit, but after a few mistakes, I learned to simply hand pass or tip the ball over.

Over the past few weeks, 12 girls and myself, have practiced every afternoon in the gym with our coaches, Mr. Higgins and Mr. Wilcox. And even though our skills were much more better compared to last year, we had so much to improve and polish. But this is definitely a great start!

Extremely excited for this volleyball season!

Student’s
Name
Felicia Lin
Supervisor’s Name
 Mr. Andrew Wilcox
Year  12
Activity Name
Varsity Volleyball
Date(s) / Duration of Activity
August 10 – October 8

What is my past experience with this activity?
I have been in varsity volleyball for two years now and have improved greatly since the first year. I enjoy playing volleyball very much as well as working with my coach and teammates. I was benched for the first year and after gaining more experience, became captain the second year of joining volleyball.

What new learning or skill do I hope to pick up or develop?
A new skill that I wish to acquire is a consistent, strong, controlled over head (open hand) serve, so that I would be able to aim and hit wherever I want. I wish to develop a more consistent top spin, whether it is in my serve or my hit. I hope to be able to hit a quick, short set in the middle without running into the net. I also hope to become a smarter and louder player on the court and learn how to improvise in order to get the best results.

How will this experience be different from that of the past?
This experience will be different from that of the past because both my team and I have matured, whether it is our skills or our attitudes. I have become more confident on the court than before and hopefully that would produce better results in our practices and games.

How am I going to know if I am making progress in achieving the goal/s I have set?
I will know that I am making progress when my open hand serves become more consistent and goes straight or downward straight towards my target, when my spike has a consistent top spin, when I could jump high enough to hit a quick set, when we win more games due to communication and good decision making.

Goals  What is/are your goal/s for this activity? What do you hope to achieve?
I hope to become better at communicating with my teammates and improve my own personal skills in serving, passing and hitting. I hope to take on new challenges and push my skills to the limit. I also hope to excel at what I’m good at and improve in what I need to work on.

Impact  Who will benefit from this activity? How?
I will benefit from this activity since it will allow me to become a better athlete, better at teamwork, better in communication and would help me understand my own strengths and weaknesses as well as those of my teammates.

Timeline  Where, how often, and for how long will the activity take place? (specific dates whenever possible)
Aug. 10 – Oct. 8, 2011

As a member of the NHS, I was given the chance to be a volunteer of the Agusuhin project. The focus of this project is on the children of the village (the school within the village). We will be going to the Agusuhin village to extend a helping hand. There will be four groups, the hygiene group, which is in charge teaching the kids the ways of washing hands and brushing teeth, the games group, which is in charge playing games and activities with the children, the music group, which is in charge of teaching children simple songs and music and lastly, the food group, which is in charge of distributing food to the children. I will be in charge of the food’s booth as the leader of the group and distribute food to all the children of the school, a rough estimate about 300 children. Although that may be my main role, but I will help in any way I can where needed. This project will be done with NHS and many other volunteers.

In this project I hope to learn to be an efficient member of the NHS and an organized leader. I wish that I would be able to keep volunteers under control and be as productive as I can be. This would also be a chance for me to practice my public speaking skills when talking to the children.

Impact *
The people of the Agusuhin village, especially the children of the school would benefit from this activity, since the National Honor Society has provided food, snacks, tooth brushes, tooth pastes, soaps and games for the children. It would be a day of fun and enjoyment for not only the children but also for us volunteers participating in this event. We, the volunteers, would have the chance to reach out to people in need, to step out of their comfort zone to make someone else happy, to experience and realize how fortunate we really are. It would give us a chance to see the small things that we are so capable of doing may have a big impact on someone’s life.
